Solmirus Introduces the FSO/DE Atmospheric Station: One Authoritative Link Status, Day and Night
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. Solmirus Corporation today introduced the FSO Atmospheric Station, a turnkey atmospheric characterization system built for free-space optical (FSO) communications and directed energy / high energy laser (HEL) programs.
The station combines the Solmirus ASIVA/ASIS calibrated infrared channel with the Miratlas all-sky visible system in a single 20 x 20 x 8 in stainless steel NEMA 4X sensor head, networked with the Miratlas DN-DIMM turbulence monitor and an external weather station. Together they measure every parameter that decides whether an optical link closes: cloud cover and cloud optical depth, transmission, turbulence (r₀, θ₀, τ₀), water vapor, irradiance and weather, continuously, 24/7/365.
The difference is in the answer. Instead of separate instruments to reconcile, SOLUS, the Solmirus Unified Software, fuses infrared, visible, turbulence and weather into one authoritative link status for the exact direction an operator is pointing: go, marginal or no-go, with every measurement and threshold behind it listed. Infrared sees cloud in the dark and through thin cirrus; Miratlas SkyVIS measures actual optical loss against the stars across 32 sky sectors. Stale or missing data grades unknown, never go.
Key capabilities:
- Calibrated all-sky LWIR imaging with absolute radiometric calibration
- All-sky visible imaging with SkyVIS per-sector availability and link classification
- Day and night turbulence from the DN-DIMM
- Short-range cloud nowcasts for fixed links and satellite passes
- Full documented API included for integration with schedulers, network operations and range systems
- STIG-hardened configuration available for government and defense deployments
"Optical ground networks and high energy laser programs both depend on the same question: what is the atmosphere doing on this line of sight right now," said Jay Brooks, CTO/CEO of Solmirus. "The FSO Atmospheric Station answers it with measurements, not models, and gives operators a single source they can trust."
"Turbulence and cloud decide every optical link," said Jean-Edouard Communal, President and CEO of Miratlas. "With the DN-DIMM measuring turbulence day and night and our visible system integrated alongside Solmirus infrared, operators get one consistent answer around the clock, with no handover at dawn or dusk."
The FSO/DE Atmospheric Station builds on more than 20 years of Solmirus all-sky infrared imaging for government, defense and research customers, and on the Miratlas Sky Monitor network operating at more than 60 stations in 20 countries.
